Are you already a wool sock lover? If not, you will be after discovering the superpowers of this natural, renewable, and biodegradable textile fibre.
Whether you are a construction worker, toughing it out through sweltering hot and freezing cold days, a teacher stepping out from the class to recess or an office worker who is simply looking for comfortable socks to last during long days, the many textile combinations on the market mean you will find the perfect socks for your feet.
But why choose wool socks for every season? Because wool has some very impressive and surprising properties.
It breathes.
Wool sock lovers enjoy an exceptional advantage: Wool’s thermal regulation. It’s a material that breathes and keeps feet warm in cold weather and cool in hot weather. Wool is the only textile that offers this ideal balance despite changing temperatures, which makes it the ultimate hiking sock material.
It stays warm, even when wet.
Those who work in extreme temperatures know this well: Clothing doesn’t generate heat, bodies do. The more air trapped in a sock and the more it can circulate, the more resistance to the cold offered. However, the knit must also breathe to let moisture escape. This is exactly what wool socks do! Even when rain creeps inside your boots, your wool socks will still keep you warm. For people whose feet sweat a lot, we suggest trying a polypropylene under sock. Since polypropylene is a water-repellent fibre, you will have the perfect blend.
It eliminates unpleasant sweat odours.
We have already mentioned that wool keeps your feet warm even when wet. In fact, it can even soak up one third of its weight in water without losing its properties. This is no small advantage when talking about sweat. Wool absorbs some of this bacteria-containing moisture and wicks it outside the sock. This wonderful natural fibre also eliminates odours thanks to its antibacterial properties… Test it out yourself at home. Wear a pair of wool socks one day, a pair made of cotton the next and a pair made of synthetic fibre, such as acrylic, the next day. Just compare the smell of each pair of socks after a day of moderate-intensity work or exercise. Your nose will tell you all you need to know!
Wool is easy to care for.
Generally speaking, treated wool is easy to care for. Be sure to buy pre-washed and pre-shrunk products to avoid ending up with tiny socks after a spin in the dryer. Your socks will be very durable and able to perform for several years. That said, avoid boiling them in the washer or blasting them with high heat. Regardless of what they’re made of, your clothes will remain in better condition if you wash them with warm water and dry them at medium temperature.
Wool is naturally fire resistant.
Wool is sometimes described as fire-resistant, but let’s be honest, everything burns… eventually. However, wool has several properties that slow fire. Wool’s combustion temperature is very high, higher than synthetic materials found in sportswear or fashion garments. Thus, you should never put any synthetic clothing (athletic style) under a flame; Unless it was purchased from a health and safety supplier with a fire resistance certification, your garment will quickly go up in flames. This is very dangerous! Wool’s absorbency also helps it to resist fire. Small water droplets slow fire down. Please note that Duray also offers fire resistant gloves that are used by line-workers. In this case, we replaced nylon, which ignites quickly, with aramid, a flame-retardant synthetic fibre.
